'Press Herald' highlights career paths of ΒιΆΉΒγΑΔβs environmental studies students
On November 8, 2015, the Portland Press Herald featured a story about ΒιΆΉΒγΑΔ students who plan to enter careers in environmental conservation.
The article discussed the aspirations of Joshua Barr (Environmental Studies, β17), Emily Green (Environmental Studies and Political Science, β15) and Shawn Nguyen (Environmental Studies major and Art minor, β16) to work in the field of conservation after graduating from ΒιΆΉΒγΑΔ. They are all students of Owen Grumbling, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, the recipient of the Maine Coast Heritage Trustβs highest award for conservation work, the New England Environmental Protection Agencyβs lifetime achievement award and the founder of ΒιΆΉΒγΑΔβs Environmental Studies Department.
The students credited Grumblingβs class with opening their eyes to the need for conservational management. βMost land managers weβve met through this class have expressed a concern in the next generation of conservationists,β he said. βThey worry their kids and grandkids wonβt do the work theyβre doing.β
The Press Herald interviewed Grumbling and his students during a field trip to Biddefordβs Clifford Park for their advanced field-lab class.
